Book Review: A Christmas Gift to Business Starters

Key players. National Assets. Heroes.

For economists, such are the entrepreneurs, businessmen, even those engaged in small, micro, or medium-sized enterprises, as they play a substantial role in the country’s economic growth.

Government particularly cites Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), whose remittances, estimated at $25 billion annually, have given the economy an unprecedented record boost. Coming home with substantial capital, a number of OFWs have engaged in business, improving their standard of living, and in the process revitalizing the economy.

Not all those who have gone into business, however, have succeeded. A good number don’t even know how to start, as they face what seems to be a maze of government processes in starting a business.

In 2017, Rowena Cequena, CPA, MBA, corporate services specialist, aware of the obstacles to building a business, launched her first book, Handy Guide for Business Starters, now a bestseller.

In light of new government regulations, particularly the TRAIN Law, Cequena has written a second book, the revised edition of Handy Guide for Business Starters, launched recently.

In handy, pocketbook size, Cequena’s work presents details of  Republic Act No. 10963, or the Tax Reform Acceleration and Inclusion Act.

Cequena’s recent revised edition of Handy Guide for Business Starters presents simple, quick and easy steps to start a business in the Philippines in accordance with the provisions of the TRAIN Law.

In just five chapters, Cequena expertly answers such questions as:  What Are the Various Forms of Business Enterprise? Where Do I Register? Where Do I Get Licenses and Permits? What Are the Reportorial Requirements? What Must I Do If I Want to Close My Business?

Not a few have given answers to these questions, but not in Cequena’s outline form— accurate, clear, and objective.

Rowena “Weng” B. Cequena, a native of Bangad Talim Island, Binangonan,  Rizal, struggled through  poverty to finish school, graduating elementary school valedictorian, finishing Accounting cum laude, and gaining the titles Certified Public Accountant and Master in Business Administration.

She has well proven that being poor is not a hindrance to success and having experienced firsthand the obstacles to entrepreneurship, particularly for the less privileged, she authored a no-nonsense  handy guide which has turned out to be a must-read for everyone else raring to venture to be one’s own boss.

What’s distinct about Weng is she has also experienced an intense spiritual awakening that has led her to choose serving in a missionary organization. She is now vice president for Corporate Services of Shepherd’s Voice Publications Inc. founded by lay preacher Bo Sanchez, who has spearheaded a movement advocating financial literacy as a key to alleviating poverty.

Under such moral environment, Cequena provides not only informative facts and figures. She offers as well her Guide for honest, upright business building.
